Playdough

Today I had Charlotte’s little playgroup friends over, and I like to make the other moms feel inferior the girls feel comfortable and welcome so I made some homemade playdough.

I’m serious, this stuff is so easy and low maintenance, it’s easier to just make it than to navigate a big red cart through the toy section of Target in search of the other stuff.  And then people think you are all that and a bag of chips because you know how to stir together flour and salt and water and a couple other ingredients.

I got my recipe from some know it all lady named Martha Stewart.

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 cup water

Put it all in a medium sized heavy saucepan and stir together over medium-high heat.  Use a sturdy wooden spoon and stir stir stir until it all comes together in a ball and you can’t stir it any longer.  Takes about three minutes.  Then turn it out onto your counter and knead some food coloring into it to make it whatever color you want.

Store this tightly wrapped in plastic in the fridge and it’s good to use for a week or so or until your kids grind all of it into your carpet.  Don’t keep it out on the counter because it’s made of food products and will get moldy.

My playdough days are over...for now. Give me a few years, and I'm winning granny of the year with my grandchildren to come.

Right on! I will be using this recipe. I made edible playdough for my toddler son and niece a few weeks ago... it was really easy and actually pretty yummy, too. You should try it.

1 C creamy peanut butter
2 C powdered sugar
1/2 C honey

Mix it up.

BTW, How did the plopping go? ;)

I wonder if I could use this stuff to make a face plaster of myself? I think I shall try.

Know-it-all-lady is a hack. She stole that recipe from my Mom about 40 years ago....ya know...before she became the know-it-all-lady.

You are a good mom. I would rather poke my eyes out than have playdough anywhere in my house! Well, unless I was trying to show up the other moms!

If you use mineral oil instead of veggie oil, it will last a lot longer and not go rancid--just a tip :)
ps you have no idea who I am but I love reading your blog--hope that's not creapy.
