No-Poo Product Review.

I’ve had this post floating around my head and in the works and I want something new to think about when I’m having my 42.9 second mom shower.  So I’m finally going to spit it out.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about when I say no-poo then go here.  And then come back please.

So I’m a pretty faithful DevaCare product user.  Much to my horror my local beauty supply is no longer going to carry Deva products.  GAH!  Which means I won’t be selling them until further notice—and hopefully another supply house will pick them up STAT.

I know that a lot of people don’t like to spend as much money on their hair (Why? WHY!?), and so I’ve been on a mission to try some less expensive no-poo friendly ‘cone-free products.

Here’s today’s lineup.

TRESemme’ Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner.  Eh.  I was really excited to find this product, and pretty stoked that they put “silicone free” right on the front of the bottle.  Helps my eyesight--reading those ingredient lists is painful.  This conditioner is nice and thick and has a nice amount of slip to it.  I was excited about the feel of it.  Mind you, I have hardly had a greasy hair day in my life--at least since puberty.  I have super dry hair and a super dry scalp.  Sadly, this conditioner leaves me greasy, stringy and less blonde looking.  It also leaves my kids greasy looking, even when I rinse it out super super well.  So I guess what I’m saying is don’t bother.  I was really disappointed.  I think I’ll stick this in my gym bag and use it in only the most dire emergencies.

Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner.  This is the standard beginner no-poo go-to product.  It has a similar feel to the TRESemme’ one, perhaps a tiny bit less moisturizing, and is a really good conditioner.  I use it mostly for a co-wash (meaning I use it to wash my hair with, instead of a shampoo, and then I follow with something a little more heavy duty).  It’s a very decent conditioner for those with healthy or just very mildly damaged hair.  And it’s cheap as can be.  This is a good one.

Aussie Aussome Volume Spray Gel.  I picked this up quite a while ago and just rediscovered it in my drawer.  Even though this is labeled as “strong” I find it to be a fairly light and non-sticky spray gel.  I like to use it on second day hair if I’ve gotten a little too fuzzy and frizzy and want to revive things.  I also like to use it on my roots when I find that I haven’t scrunched my normal gel well enough up into my roots.  It’s also great as kind of a finisher for curly hair girls.  When your hair is dry and you need to scrunch out the crunch from your gel, you can spray this on before you scrunch and it will give you a little extra hold and finish.  This is going to be a staple for me.  Hope they still make it!

Redken Quick Dry 18 aerosol hairspray.  I love this hairspray.  Even if you aren’t avoiding silicone, this is a great hairspray.  Redken is a professional line and isn’t the cheapest thing in America, but it’s not outrageously expensive.  And it’s easy to find at almost any grocery or super store.  This is a nice dry aerosol, a great medium hold, but you can layer more if you need some extra guts.

Garnier Fructis 3-Minute Undo Dryness Reversal Treatment.  This conditioner has a nice creamy texture but hardly any slip at all.  Which makes it a beast for detangling my hair.  Might be better for someone with shorter hair and less hair than I have.  Might be great also for straighter hair.  It’s also kind of weird that it has little bits of apricot seeds in it.  A weird addition to a conditioner, better suited to a face scrub methinks.  I was kind of annoyed with this product as I was struggling to get enough distributed through my hair.  I think I may only end up getting 7 or 8 applications out of the whole tube because it took a ton of product to do the job.  However on the days that I used this I had fantastically well-defined shiny curls.  Who knew!  I probably won’t buy it again because it’s not slippery enough for me, but worth a try for people who don’t need as much detangling.

So that’s what I’ve got for you today.  Any questions?  If you have tried a product and you want to share your experience then let me know.  I would seriously love to hear about it.

I’m also super stoked about the extensions I’ve been doing lately.  They are incredible.  They put very little stress on your own hair because of the way they are attached and because a little goes a very long way.  It also means they are lightweight.  They are just beautiful and super affordable.

Here’s the lovely Jenn before and after.

Ooooh.  Don’t you want some now?  Come and get it kids.

I can't believe you are basically calling me out on using cheap hair product!! First you tell me that your love story is greater than mine, and now this!!

I really need to try this no-poo thing. Any idea if costco makes a sulfate/cone free product?

(I'm kidding)

What do you mean you follow the Suave with something more heavy duty? What do you use?

I feel like a junkie whose supplier got busted and is serving hard time. Good thing I just stocked up on the DevaCurl!

First - I can't believe you have TWO Rachel commenters. You are so dang lucky.

Second - I really love this post. I have a low hair-knowledge IQ and always appreciate learning more without having to ask stupid questions. I'm glad you know your stuff.

I think you should tell me some more mid-priced items that would be good shampoos and conditioners. I would love to be silicone and sulfate free. :)

Oh, Kate! You're simply the best. Better than all the rest. More reviews, please!!! Especially if you find a good detangler--my hair gets matted all the time in the back at the neckline so 2nd day hair is always TERRIBLE! I will be trying the Suave for washing. I didn't care for the Garnier one, please lmk what your fave heavy-duty conditioners are. Also, dare I ask, a leave-in conditioning spray?

I've used Garnier's triple condition normal conditioner (not the super duty one that you tried), and absolutely love it. I have wavy hair (but more on the curly side), coarse hair, and it works great for me. Thanks for the review, deva curl is definitely not in my price range! I will have to try the aussie spray, I've been looking for a spray gel everywhere! Suave used to make one, and it's gone!

I just tried the DevaCurl products but I have the natural curly hair that is super curly on the bottom and has straight spots on the top. The conditoner felt great but was soo great that most of my curl was gone. The gel was definately not enough to help put some body and curl back in. Are there good products to follow up with to give me some curl back after the conditoner? Right now I use Paul Mitchell mousse and a curl enhancer by big head. Are they no nos?

couple questions for you, Kate... First, if I decide to switch to a sulfate-free shampoo, is there an initial shampooing technique I should be doing to "prepare" my hair?

Also, have you heard of the Living Proof line at Sephora? I've been using their conditioner and curl defining styling cream for a couple months and I'd like to make the jump to their shampoo too. They advertise that their products are sulfate and silicone free. Just curious if you're familiar with the line.

Thanks!
