Recovering runner.

I am back from the gorgeous Wasatch mountains where I survived the Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay.  I swear, one of these days I will stop talking about Ragnar altogether.  That day might be tomorrow.  Please don’t let me sign up for the Wasatch Back again.  Don’t get me wrong, I am overjoyed to have done it once and be able to check that off the list, but NEVER AGAIN! (Unless I can be runner #4.)  Avon Pass has ruined me for that.  Avon Pass is probably a lovely Sunday drive to take in your SUV, but Avon Pass is not a run I’d ever like to do again.  It sucked rocks.  I was able to run quite a bit for the first probably 3.5 miles.  There were some nice shady and barely uphill parts, but then the last 4 miles?  YUCK.  I would call that a hike.  Not a run.  My hip sockets were starting to freakin’ kill me so I was just trucking it at as fast a walk as I could manage.  I was keeping up with a girl in front of me who at one point burst into tears.  I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR sister.  I had to literally force myself to look up and take in the beautiful surroundings every once in a while and remind myself that there was more to it than that hideous dirt treadmill under my feet.  My team was awesome with the moral support and I love them so much for that.  When I finally dragged my chunky butt across the exchange someone from my team asked “how do you feel?”  And I can’t tell you my reply because this is a family blog.  But if you know me well you know what I said.

My second leg was a nice little jaunt through the cute farmy towns of, um, let me look it up…  Oh yes, Morgan and Richville.  I loved jogging past the cows and couldn’t help myself so I said “Hi ladies!!”  I was wussing out and walking at the end of that one until some girls on their front porch said “Come on!  Run!  You can run!”  And I was like “I CAN run goshdangit!”  I loved the spectators who watched from their yards and cheered me on.  I needed it.  Soooooo tiiiiiiiired.

Then a Ragnar miracle occurred.  I’m not sure if my team understands that this is a rarity.  We got 5 hours of sleep.  Blissful sleep on a grassy field.  Ahhhhh.

The next day was my third and final run.  3 miles.  Keri, wonderful Keri, came up to run with me and that was just awesome.  Bless the last mile of that one for being a beautiful downhill.  I needed a downhill desperately.

Wow, I wasn’t intending to do a full race report but there you have it.  Had a hilarious time with my team, loved stumping John at his own game (Pat Benatar!), loved all the poop jokes, and I am so glad I did it.  I don’t think I ever really blogged about the last Ragnar because I wasn’t stoked about the fact that we only completed two-thirds of it because a young man was hit by a car just a couple of miles ahead of us (he died a few days later), which threw the whole race off and basically thwarted our will to carry on.  So it feels awesome to have finished this one.

Sad news is I lost my camera.  Sob.

One more race this summer.  A 10K in July, and then I’m going to be a 5K girl from here on out.

I know.  I’m a pansy.  :)

You'll change your tune in 10 months. You'll be itching to get back out there.

5 hours!? I got 1. I don't sleep well at all in cars or in the middle of the day.

I was runner #12 and our team was called "Crop Dusters". I didn't know what that meant until after 5 hours into it, they told me that "crop dusting" is when you fart and the people behind you smell it.

Nice.

I did see your van at least a couple times that I remember.

Awesome job Kate!

Did I tell you I signed up for the Spokane to Sandpoint relay? Holy crap I should start training, huh? Ummm...any tips?

I want to do the ragnar BAD! But after reading your first paragraph (totally freaking hilarious by the way), I've decided maybe not.

Seriously. I can run a 5k decent (and when I say decent I mean in 30 minutes decent.. oh, and that's when I'm not 8 months pregnant like I am now, of course. It will take a while to get back to that 30 minutes and this is a really long run-on sentence) but I've never actually done a 5k race. I just run it on my own. Pathetic much?

But for real. I have always wanted to do some sort of race. One day. One day.

I am so proud of you! My friend nominated me team captain for 2011 Ragnar here in DC, I expect you on my team. I hear it is easier to run at sea level.

Kate! You are awesome! Good job on the race. I am supposed to do the 10k in July....but I think I might have given up that goal. How do you do it? Seriously - I need your best tips. I keep going running - really I do, but I just don't seem to be getting any better at it. I still can not run a full mile. Of course, I am 20 (or maybe 30 if I'm being honest with myself) lbs overweight and that makes it harder to run....but I get so discouraged when I go out for a run and seem to not be any stronger / better than the last time.

Sorry for the long post. Good job on the Ragnar. I'm proud of you (wiping a tear)

Kate,
I am so freakin proud of you.I remeber sitting at your salon telling you, "Avon sucks rocks big time!"

Now I know you are an official animal and Ragnar maniac. Your story is inspiring and totally Ragnar. Five hours is unheard of.

I love you and I just want you to know how proud of you I am.

love,
dom

Ragnar = kinda like childbirth. In the middle of it you wish you had an epidural and some good sleep. A couple of weeks later, all you remember is the good stuff. Hey, at least you didn't have anyone take Ambien in your group and sleep through an exchange!

Wish I could have gone this year...next year for sure!

Congratulations! Awesome once again, my friend!

I agree with Cheeseboy, though. You'll be contemplating a half marathon within a year. That runner's high is a very addictive chemical. And it does terrible things to your brain. :)

ok and one more, i can't believe you quit the juice! wtf? you are my hero. I justify it with changing my choice of soda...one day diet coke, one day diet pepsi, one day coke zero, one day diet dr pepper.....that way there is no constant...it's just a sip here and there of some beverage....really lame justification huh? xo

You rock, Babe! You are my hero. Now come join the lowly group of us that just run 5k's. (:
